The Charismatic Elder Athanasios lived through the following true story, which he himself recounted to me in the year 2019. I narrate it here in writing, briefly and in its main points: About four decades ago, this enlightened Elder had gone on pilgrimage to the Holy City, the God‑protected City, and to Hagia Sophia.
When, during the guided tour, the Elder reached a certain specific spot inside the Holy Church of the Wisdom of God, he suddenly stopped. Abruptly. And immediately the Elder asked the tour guide: “Mrs. so‑and‑so, please tell me what exactly is beneath this spot,” while simultaneously pointing to that exact place on the floor with his walking stick.
The guide, quite shaken, replied: “Father, let us go. I will tell you. Please, move along.”
A few minutes later, Fr. Athanasios continued: “Ah! And please also tell me, madam, what is that door over there?,” again pointing with his walking stick toward the specific entrance.
The guide, now thoroughly frightened, said to him in a very strict tone: “Father, please! Move along! Please. Let us go. And I will explain.”
So it happened.
Later, the guide explained to Father Athanasios: “Father, the place you pointed to earlier with your walking stick, beneath it lies the incorrupt body of the sleeping King, the Holy King John!” She told him and explained at the same time that “the highest leadership of Turkey knows this fact very well.”
“For this reason, Father Athanasios,” the guide continued, “when I conduct tours for Greek pilgrims, I am not allowed even to stand at those two spots, not even for a few seconds. Furthermore, Father, I must inform you that a secret agent, pretending to be a tour guide, a Turkish woman, always follows me so that I do not pause even momentarily at those exact two places you pointed out with your walking stick.”
And Father Athanasios asked the guide again, now with an even more puzzled tone and meaning: “And why is this, my child? What is the reason they hide it?”
Guide: “Because, Father, if the Turkish citizens learned of this fact, all of them would become Orthodox Christians! The Turkish state would face an insurmountable problem.”
And Father Athanasios, filled with fresh astonishment, asked the guide once more: “And if, my child, for example, you were to break the rules and stop at those two critical spots, what would happen?”
Guide: “If I did that, Father, they would…,” and the humble Elder Athanasios showed me with his hand, symbolically, the gesture of… cutting the throat.
