Father Panagiotis Tsiolis
In this simple reflection, but a revelation, one that binds the legacy of Alexander the Great with the spiritual destiny of Greece, the awaited mission of Saint John Vatatzes, and the unfolding plan of Divine Providence. The elder spoke not as a historian, but as a man who had seen the threads of grace woven through centuries, urging us to trust God’s plan rather than our own.
The late and grace-filled Father Panagiotis, speaking to the publisher, theologian, and journalist Dionysis Makris, once said: “You know, my child, why Christ blessed the Greeks and Greece?”
One day, the elder of Agrafa, our beloved elder Father Panagiotis, asked me this question. His question surprised me. I sensed something important was coming, and he paused: “The great blessing we received is owed to our holy young man and king, the pride of Macedonia and Greece Alexander the Great. He was not only a king but also humble and a model of piety. He was an ornament of virtue. He tilled the field upon which Christ sowed the seeds of salvation. His teacher had instilled in him all those beautiful teachings that open the path to the Triune God. Our King Alexander was and still is a vessel of grace. He now leads the spiritual forces that will liberate the Queen City, Constantinople, and deliver it to the holy king, John Vatatzes. He will lift Greece out of the mire of unrepentance and bring about the long-awaited unity that repentance secures.”
- I thought to myself: “The elder must be confused,” as I listened to what he was saying.
Suddenly, he interrupted my thoughts and said: “Some think I have lost my mind and become confused. You see, they weren’t taught these things in their schools. They weren’t told, for example, that this holy young man wasn’t a conqueror but a civilizer of nations. He introduced them to the greatness of the Greek language, the language of angels, the language of Heaven. He brought them culture. And do you know why Christ took him near at the prime of his life? Because He wanted to keep him untainted, pure. To protect him from pitfalls and Babylonian depravity. Besides, he had completed the mission God had entrusted to him. When God allows the tomb of King Alexander to be revealed, then you will see the whole place will be filled with fragrance. And fragrance is a sign of holiness. Isn’t that right, theologian?”
- “Yes, elder,” I replied.
“The tomb of King Alexander is in Greece. And it will be revealed when the Greeks manage to break the chains of bondage. Because today we are bound to the Devil’s gourd, immersed in passions and sin.”
- “Some claim he was buried in Egypt…”
“In Egypt, a symbolic burial took place. The real one happened in Greece. Back then, dead kings were buried with gold, precious metals, and gemstones because the poor souls believed that wealth would be needed in the afterlife. Somewhere in Macedonia lies the tomb of Alexander the Great. But the gold was taken from there and moved to a secure location in one of Greece’s blessed mountains. This gold will be used by Saint King John Vatatzes once he takes the reins of Constantinople. God has a plan. Do you hear me, theologian? God has a plan, and we must simply follow it not insist that Christ accept our own plans. We must have absolute trust in His providence.”
After two couples and a police officer who had been listening to these strange accounts left, the elder pulled me aside and said: “Theologian, do not doubt what I’ve told you. Alexander the Great is at the forefront, leading the spiritual forces that will reclaim the City. Believe, and God will deem you worthy to receive Holy Communion in our Great Church, Hagia Sophia. The adversary knows the holiness of Alexander. That is why he has unleashed all his agents, both local and foreign, to slander him calling him perverse, a murderer, a conquering killer. To tarnish his memory and legacy, the Vatican moved to establish a counterfeit multicultural state and name it Macedonia. That’s why the Pope was the first to recognize the Slavic state, signaling others to follow. But the day is near when Skopje will dissolve, no matter how much some of our pseudo-politicians and foreign powers try to support it.”
