The vision of the late Elder Nikodimos Makris, of the Holy Monastery of Saint Marina in Sofiko, Corinth, concerning the Holy King John. The late Elder narrated this vision to Nikolaos Karypidis, just as he had previously narrated it to his personal physician, Evangelos Kotsiomitis, associate professor at the Medical School of the University of Athens.
“My child Nikola, the Archangel Michael, Commander‑in‑Chief of the heavenly hosts, appears to me and shows me seven kings, who were standing before me in a row. The Archangel asked me which of the kings was the most beautiful, and I pointed to John the Merciful (Vatatzes). I love Saint John the Merciful, my child.”
(It was March of 1950, and the Feast of the Annunciation of the Theotokos was approaching.)
“When the false prophets, Freemasons and Jews, were persecuting us, I hid in a dried‑up well.” (Here Elder Nikodimos makes a historical reference to the earlier events of the great persecutions of the Church during the period 1930–40). “There I made three thousand prostrations a day. At some point I fell into a light sleep… Then a figure appeared before me, shining, whose radiance was stronger than the sun. I was frightened. And then I heard Him say to me: ‘Nikodimos, rise and paint only the form of My head. I am John the Merciful.’ When I recovered from the shock, I venerated Him and said:
‘But I have no paints.’
And He said to me: ‘You had, and still have, great faith in the Triune God. Ask now, and He will reveal it to you.’ So it happened, and I painted Him. Before I lost Him from my sight, He said to me: ‘Before the Antichrist comes, Orthodoxy will shine again. Do not forget, Nikodimos! Hagia Sophia is the House of our Great God! It will shine with majesty…’ And He added that I, together with Him, will serve the Divine Liturgy in the House of our Father God, after my death, of course…
Very soon Christ will send His chosen servant, John the Merciful, to accomplish the Re‑Evangelization of the Nations in the true faith of the Holy Apostles! He will act shortly before the coming Antichrist and during the reign of that pseudo‑Messiah! In his era Orthodoxy will shine! Blessed are the people who will live through the events of those days.”
